From a small family driving school in Quinns Rocks to a team helping learners across Perth, our story is shaped by the people behind Driving West and a lasting commitment to safer roads.
Darry and Angie Zarb Cousin founded Driving West Motor School in Quinns Rocks in 1997. With around three instructors serving Perth’s northern suburbs, a family business began.
Our purpose was simple: help people build the skills and confidence to drive safely and enjoy greater independence.
By the early 2000s, Driving West had expanded north and south of the river, with a team of 15 driving instructors.
Angie looked after lesson bookings while Darry managed the school and supported its instructors. As the school grew, family remained at the heart of it.

In July 2008, Darry Zarb Cousin lost his life in a road crash at the corner of Santa Barbara Parade and Marmion Avenue, Quinns Rocks.
The school closed as the family grieved. Darry’s commitment to teaching and road safety remained an important part of the family’s life, and would later inspire Driving West’s next chapter.
Five years later, Darry’s eldest son, Dirk Zarb Cousin, reopened the school with one car and a renewed purpose.
He wanted to honour his father’s legacy and make a positive difference on Perth’s roads, helping a new generation of learners become safer, more confident drivers.
Darry’s daughter, Rebekah Zarb Cousin, joined Driving West as a driving instructor in 2015.
Together, Dirk and Rebekah continued the family’s work, bringing patience, understanding and a shared commitment to road safety into their lessons.
On the tenth anniversary of Darry’s passing, the family shared their story in a Today Tonight interview. The feature remembered Darry and explored why safer driving matters so deeply to the people behind Driving West.

By 2023, Driving West had grown to seven driving instructors. The team’s focus remained personal: support each learner, build practical driving skills and help students feel prepared for their driving assessment.
Driving West expanded into motorcycle training in 2025 with the launch of Riding West.
It brought the same focus on safety, skills and confidence to riders taking their next step on two wheels.
